A Few Words from Penn Kimball

By Penn Kimball
Professor, Retired

Longtime Professor Penn Kimball submitted the following message via his daughter, Lisa Kimball (lisa[at]groupjazz.com)

Now 96 ½ I’ve slowed down a lot and live in assisted living but still follow the Red Sox and enjoy watching politics unfold via the news on TV.   I also enjoy visits from former J-Schoolers and hearing about what you all are doing.   The last book I wrote before retiring, Downsizing the News: Network Cutbacks in the Nation's Capital, was published in 1994 based on work I did as a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in DC.  It was built about the idea that, “WHAT is going on in network television is a redefinition of news, driven by financial considerations and ratings.”  Add technology to the mix and it’s a whole new world out there.  I still think the best way to really find out what’s happening is to “go there” … and remember not to bury the lead.
